An Overview: Social Anxiety Disorder
Social anxiety disorder is one of the most common forms of anxiety disorders and is completely different from what others perceive to be mere shyness. The former is undeniably more intense and can often affect the way one deals with life on an everyday basis. Generally speaking, social anxiety symptoms include obsessive fear of being ridiculed or judged by others, especially during social situations. The initial anxiety treatment administered to someone who is suffering from this condition depends on the severity of the condition and the symptoms shown. In some cases, anxiety and depression might come together. - Behavioral Therapy: This treatment method aims to identify social situations or triggers to anxiety attacks in the hopes of reversing or addressing this symptom. An individual is therefore encouraged to acknowledge the fear and take it on as an important process of social anxiety treatment.
- Social Skills Training: This type of therapy involves role-playing and rehearsing in an effort to condition an individual’s mind and behavior during social situations, thus reducing the uncomfortable feeling during such situations and eliminating fear.
- Cognitive Restructuring: This anxiety therapy aims at improving the way an individual thinks with an objective of improving one’s capacity to deal with social situations.
- Exposure Therapy: In this type of social anxiety disorder treatment and therapy, you will be asked to re-enact a specific social situation that trigger fear and anxiety. The more you are exposed to this situation, the better able you are to overcome the sense of fear due to the familiarity and understanding of the situation.
